The First Path Into Space - Original Russian Poster

A striking Soviet space poster by the DONA collective, centered on Sputnik, the world’s first artificial satellite, launched by the Soviet Union in 1957. Rising through an ornate, traditional architectural gateway, Sputnik marks a passage from the old world into the new age of space exploration.

The elegant blue-and-white composition is enlivened by the tiny red satellite at its summit. Hand screen-printed on heavy paper stock, the poster has a particularly strong graphic and tactile presence.

Agitplakat Dona was a poster collective established in Rostov-on-Don in the early 1960s, bringing together artists and writers whose designs were subsequently distributed throughout the Soviet Union.

The slogan reads: “We have laid the first path into space — the stars of Earth have kindled a bright light there!”
